BetMGM Discontinues Credit Card Acceptance, Blocks New Applications

(AsiaGameHub) -   BetMGM has formally discontinued the use of credit cards for its sportsbook and online casino services. The operator confirmed that, effective Tuesday, March 31, it is blocking all new credit card registrations. BetMGM Ends New Credit Card Use – Begins Phasing Existing Ones Out Users who have previously deposited bonuses or funds using their current credit cards will be permitted to use those balances before their cards are also deactivated. This process will be gradual, but BetMGM has taken a firm stance, aligning with a broader industry movement where other gambling giants are also abandoning this payment method due to consumer protection concerns. However, the move to halt credit card use is driven by a more extensive business logic. BetMGM was recently penalized $100,000 in Pennsylvania after the state's gaming board found that thousands of accounts were fraudulently opened using stolen identities. Eliminating credit card payments will assist BetMGM in addressing comparable fraud incidents going forward. Restricting this deposit option would directly enhance consumer safety and also complicate efforts for bad actors to exploit stolen information. Deeper Business Rationale as Credit Cards Ban Is Good for Companies From a financial perspective, firms also have minimal incentive to avoid this course of action. Per Citizens JMP Securities analyst Jordan Bender, DraftKings, which ceased taking credit card payments in September, has seen no major negative fallout. The industry consensus is that prohibiting credit cards does not materially affect company profitability. FanDuel and DraftKings already function in several jurisdictions that prohibit credit cards for funding gambling accounts, including Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Oregon, Rhode Island, and others. While a credit card ban offers public relations benefits, it primarily fulfills a more significant regulatory and financial objective for gambling operators. VICI Intends to Acquire Alberta Casino Assets in a $144 Million Transaction

(AsiaGameHub) -   VICI Properties, an experiential real estate investment trust listed on the S&P 500, has reached an agreement to acquire the real estate assets of three casino locations in Alberta, Canada, in a transaction valued at $144.4 million (CAD 200.6 million). New Rent Underway This acquisition, encompassing the Deerfoot Inn & Casino, the Great Northern Casino, and two limited-service hotels adjacent to the Great Northern Casino, is connected to Pure Casino Entertainment Limited Partnership's (PURE) proposed private acquisition of Gamehost. Upon closing, these properties will be integrated into VICI's current master lease with PURE, a step projected to boost annual rental income by $11.6 million (CAD 16.1 million), calculated using an 8.0% acquisition capitalization rate. As per the revised lease agreement, rent will increase by 1.0% commencing on the first February 1st following a full year after the deal's close. Subsequent rent escalations will adhere to the existing formula in the PURE master lease, increasing by either 1.5% annually or according to the Canadian consumer price index, whichever amount is greater. The lease's duration will also be lengthened, establishing a 25-year initial term and granting the option for four five-year renewal periods. The lease obligations will remain guaranteed by Indigenous Gaming Partners. Pending Approvals and Closing Requirements Subject to obtaining "customary regulatory approvals and closing conditions," the transaction is anticipated to be finalized by mid-2026. VICI intends to finance the purchase through a combination of "cash on hand and drawings under its existing multicurrency revolving credit facility." The company stated that the acquisition is expected to be immediately accretive to its earnings upon completion. John Payne, president and chief operating officer of VICI Properties: "We are very excited to deepen and expand our presence in the Canadian gaming market, a very steady and stable gaming jurisdiction, alongside an existing partner." "Having worked alongside IGP and PURE, we have seen firsthand their ability to operate and grow a best-in-class gaming platform, and we are proud to continue supporting that growth as their real estate partner and capital provider," he added. In addition to this announcement about the Canadian assets, VICI has also released a Transaction Overview presentation. This article is provided by a third-party. Lisa of Blackpink to Become the First K-Pop Star with a Las Vegas Residency

(AsiaGameHub) -   Las Vegas is set to welcome Lisa, the Blackpink member and K-Pop artist. This engagement marks the first residency for a K-Pop star in Sin City and has been aptly titled “Viva La Visa.” The shows will take place across two weekends at the Colosseum in Caesars Palace – on November 13-14 and November 27-28. Lisa brings a strong repertoire for fans, including her solo album "Alter Ego" from last year and a recently released EP titled “Deadline.” Las Vegas residencies have consistently attracted both tourists and performers who are comfortable with repeated shows in one venue. Metallica recently announced their own residency at The Sphere, scheduled to begin on October 1, 2026. Earlier this year in February, the Backstreet Boys confirmed a third extension of their residency at the same venue. Artists from across the globe have made it a tradition to perform regularly in Las Vegas. Bruno Mars, a frequent performer in the city, was once the subject of rumors alleging he owed MGM Resorts International a significant gambling debt, a claim that was denied by both the singer and the resort. Confirmed: Super Bowl Set to Return to Las Vegas in 2029

(AsiaGameHub) -   Las Vegas will play host to the Super Bowl in 2029, as Allegiant Stadium has been selected to hold the game for the second time after its first hosting gig in 2024. The Decision Is Official NFL team owners voted to approve the widely anticipated choice during a gathering in Phoenix, confirming a result many insiders had predicted for months. That inaugural Las Vegas-hosted Super Bowl ended with Kansas City beating San Francisco 25-22 in overtime, and the event left a lasting positive impression on league leadership. For many years, though, the NFL avoided holding the event in Las Vegas, primarily due to concerns related to legalized sports wagering. But stances have evolved as the city has steadily developed into a leading national sports hub. “We’re Excited to Bring the Super Bowl Back to Las Vegas” Commissioner Roger Goodell expressed enthusiasm for the announcement, citing the city’s proven capacity to execute large-scale, high-profile events. “We’re excited to bring the Super Bowl back to Las Vegas and provide our fans another incredible experience in one of America’s greatest sports and entertainment destinations,” he said. Goodell also emphasized the positive impact of the 2024 event. “Super Bowl LVIII demonstrated the scale, energy, and hospitality the city brings to global events, and we look forward to working alongside the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, the Raiders, and the community to deliver an even greater experience this time around.” The NFL’s upcoming Super Bowl hosting lineup is already fully locked in, with California set to host next year’s game in Inglewood, followed by Atlanta in 2028, before Las Vegas takes its turn as host in 2029. “A Testament” to the Raiders, the NFL, and the Community Raiders owner Mark Davis attributed the return of the game to years of coordinated planning and cross-group collaboration. “It’s a testament to the Raiders, the LVCVA, civic leaders, the community, and the NFL working together as one,” he said. “Super Bowl LVIII set a high bar, and for Super Bowl LXIII we are committed to raising it even further.” Las Vegas has built a strong reputation as a dependable host for major sporting events. Since the Raiders relocated to the city in 2020, it has also hosted the 2022 NFL Draft, and is scheduled to put on a number of other high-profile events in the coming years, including the College Football Playoff national championship and the Final Four. NFL executive Peter O’Reilly stated that the success of Las Vegas’ first Super Bowl made the approval decision an easy one. “Clearly, Super Bowl 58 in Las Vegas was a tremendous success,” he said. “Every element of that, everything that Las Vegas brought to bear, the energy, the size, the scale, the hospitality. That’s why Las Vegas is the host of so many premier sports and entertainment events,” added O’Reilly. This article is provided by a third-party. New York Moves to Curb Youth Betting and AI in Gambling Reform

(AsiaGameHub) -   New York is gearing up for a comprehensive revamp of its sports betting regulations, prioritizing the protection of minors and mitigating the dangers associated with compulsive gambling. Spearheaded by Governor Kathy Hochul, this initiative implements a combination of technological barriers and enhanced supervision for betting operators throughout the state. New York Considers Biometric Checks and AI Restrictions in Gambling Enforcement These proposals arise from increasing anxiety regarding the swift expansion of mobile wagering apps, which officials fear are highly visible and accessible to younger demographics. State authorities contend that although wagering is limited to individuals 21 and older, minors have successfully circumvented these rules, frequently by utilizing accounts registered to another person’s identity. To seal these loopholes, regulators are evaluating a range of measures focused on identity verification. A primary consideration is the implementation of biometric authentication, mandating that users verify their identity both during account creation and prior to placing wagers. Further safeguards might involve device registration protocols and location monitoring intended to detect irregular access patterns or concurrent logins from geographically distant areas. A significant component of the strategy involves a proposed prohibition on utilizing artificial intelligence for marketing activities. Regulators worry that AI mechanisms used to customize promotions and recommend bets could negatively impact susceptible individuals. Within the new regulatory structure, operators would retain the ability to analyze user behavior for safety monitoring, but they would be barred from swaying betting choices via personalized incentives. New York Proposes Stepped Interventions for Hazardous Gambling Habits The regulatory updates also establish a systematic method for detecting risky gambling behavior. Operators would be mandated to intervene upon the activation of specific predefined “activity triggers” associated with emerging patterns. These indicators might include substantial deposits made in brief timeframes, frequent withdrawal cancellations, or sudden spikes in gambling duration. Upon the activation of a trigger, operators would be required to adhere to a tiered response protocol. The first phase would entail distributing details regarding responsible gambling resources. Should the problematic behavior persist, users could be compelled to view educational content. In escalated scenarios, operators would establish direct outreach and potentially suspend accounts. Continued warning signs could result in account termination and referrals to professional assistance programs. The accountability measures outlined in the proposals reach beyond just the operators. Adults discovered to have facilitated underage gambling risk being barred entirely from engaging in any legal gambling activities within the state. The New York State Gaming Commission has initiated a public consultation on the draft regulations, soliciting input from industry players, advocacy organizations, and citizens. The consultation window is scheduled to remain open until mid-May. Officials characterize the initiative as a component of a larger strategy to balance the financial advantages of legalized wagering with the imperative to protect public health, especially given the ongoing expansion of digital gambling. Macau Junket Count Rises to 31, Remains Below Limit

(AsiaGameHub) -   Macau's Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) has confirmed the licensing of two new junket operators in the world's premier gaming hub. Xin Wei Lda and Pok Lok Promoção de Jogos Lda have received authorization to cater to VIP gamblers at the city's casinos. This increases the total number of licensed junkets to 31, a rise from 29 last year, yet remains significantly under the sector's maximum allowance of 50. Junkets act as intermediaries for wealthy casino clients, most of whom come from mainland China. Historically, they provided credit and payment services, allowing VIPs to circumvent China's currency controls that restricted daily overseas transfers to 20,000 renminbi ($3,200). At their zenith in 2014, 235 junket operators dominated Macau's casino sector, accounting for up to 70% of all gaming revenue. Sector marked by scandal The junket system began to collapse under the oversight of Chinese President Xi Jinping, who assumed leadership in 2013. His administration initiated a robust anti-corruption campaign. One key focus was halting the illegal outflow of capital from the mainland, which included money moved by VIP gamblers. The initial collapse occurred in 2014 when Macau junket operator Huang Shan left the region, defaulting on HK$10 billion ($1.3 billion) in debt. That year, a Chinese court also designated Hengsheng Group's Ji Xiaobo as a major crime figure. He was accused of establishing illicit casinos abroad, employing violence to recover gambling debts, and laundering the proceeds. In 2015, a cage cashier stole HK$700 million from Dore Entertainment, a junket running VIP rooms at Wynn Macau. In 2023, Suncity Group chief Alvin Chau was convicted of illegal gambling and organized crime in a case that accelerated the downturn for Macau's junket operators. The critical strike followed with the arrest and prosecution of two prominent junket leaders. In 2023, a Chinese court convicted Suncity's "junket king," Alvin Chau, of illegal gambling and organized crime. His scheme, involving HK$823.7 billion in unreported bets, deprived the Macau government of HK$8.26 billion in tax income. Chau received an 18-year prison sentence. Tak Chun junket head Levo Chan was sentenced to 14 years for comparable offenses. He enabled clandestine betting operations that cost casinos HK$35 billion and the government around HK$8.6 billion. Macau junkets: Down but not out By 2024, a mere 18 junkets were operating in Macau, leading to predictions of the sector's demise. Those obituaries were premature, but the regulatory landscape has been fundamentally reshaped. Under Macau's 2023 gaming law, junkets can no longer extend credit or operate VIP rooms. They are restricted to partnering with a single one of Macau's six casino concessionaires, though a concessionaire may work with multiple junkets. Junkets now earn a fixed 1.25% commission on rolling chip turnover, rather than a share of casino revenues. While 31 junkets are officially registered, perhaps only 20 are actively in business. Nonetheless, the local government anticipates collecting MOP150 million ($18.6 million) in tax this year from commissions casinos pay to junkets. This represents a 50% increase over the MOP100 million projected for the 2025 fiscal year. Balkan Gaming Federation Established as Western Balkans Industry Body

(AsiaGameHub) -   Seven national gaming associations across the Western Balkans have established a unified Balkan Gaming Federation (BGF) to advance regional cooperation within the gaming sector.  This week, the organizations signed a Memorandum of Cooperation in Belgrade at a meeting hosted by Serbia’s Association of Gaming Operators (AGOS). Bulgaria’s Association of Online Gaming and Gambling Operators (AOGGOB) co-led the initiative. Enhancing Enforcement Against Illegal Gambling The agreement aims to unify the voice of the region’s gambling industry by bringing together seven national associations representing operators, suppliers, and tech providers. These associations hail from Serbia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and North Macedonia. The federation was created as a platform to coordinate policy, compliance, and commercial activities throughout the region without replacing existing national organizations. In a Monday statement, the federation noted it intends to leverage combined expertise and resources to boost enforcement efforts against illegal gambling. It will also work to combat unfair competition, facilitate the exchange of regulatory best practices, and conduct joint lobbying on legislative issues. Additionally, it plans to foster business partnerships, organize regional events, and roll out shared marketing initiatives aimed at raising the Western Balkans’ profile within Europe’s gaming sector. At the Belgrade meeting, attendees presented market analyses and discussed initial contributions. The federation agreed on a provisional brand identity and established internal communication channels to coordinate upcoming initiatives. The Nations Backing the Federation Launched by Serbian and Bulgarian industry associations and held in Serbia’s capital, the memorandum aligned with ongoing regulatory reforms across the region. The participating countries have a diverse range of regulated gambling markets.  Serbia and Romania are recognized for their large online gambling sectors that attract international operators like Bet365, Evoke, and most recently, Superbet via its acquisition of Maxbet. Croatia and Bulgaria have substantial land-based casino industries alongside expanding online operations.  Bosnia and Herzegovina has a more fragmented regulatory landscape, a challenge the federation aims to address. Bulgaria recently tightened sports betting regulations to impose an absolute ban on betting by its national football players and team staff. This follows an increase in the self-exclusion period to one year. As of March 2025, 54,000 individuals had opted into Bulgaria’s self-exclusion programme. Croatia is currently rolling out a national self-exclusion scheme for gamblers. Meanwhile, Montenegro is facing disputes over planned tax reforms. Relations with European Entities A major discussion topic was the federation’s ties with EUROMAT, the leading European amusement and gaming association. Several BGF member bodies already hold memberships with EUROMAT.  The meeting’s consensus was to position the BGF as a distinct Balkan cluster that maintains connections with existing European frameworks while asserting its own regional identity. The associations scheduled a follow-up gathering on May 26, coinciding with the Belgrade Future Gaming exhibition. Organizers expect to finalize the federation’s governance structure and elect its president by autumn 2026. Charity Event Interrupted by Online Gambling Personalities

(AsiaGameHub) -   Photographer Steve Williams is a well-recognized figure in Los Angeles’ Skid Row due to nearly twenty years of philanthropic efforts. His organization focuses on hosting events to provide food and necessities while offering emotional support to the community. However, a recent interruption at a charity drive highlighted the problematic behavior of online gambling influencers. The Interruption Might Have Been Deliberate While volunteers were in the middle of providing over 300 meals, two young individuals arrived carrying large amounts of alcohol. Witnesses reported that the pair started handing out bottles of vodka and whiskey to those waiting for food. Williams confronted the individuals immediately and ordered them to depart. In a post on X, Williams noted that the actions of the two men ran counter to the goals of the event. He pointed out that distributing liquor in an area where people struggle with addiction daily was incredibly damaging. Williams emphasized that the priority should remain on essentials like food, clothing, and sustained assistance to help people improve their lives. “In an environment where individuals are battling for survival… why introduce something that ruins lives? We provide more than 1,200 meals monthly because people require hope—not liquor.” Steve Williams Reports suggest the two men may have had an underlying motive rather than just being misguided. One individual was wearing camera glasses and allegedly mentioned the crypto-based gambling site Rainbet. While the specifics were unclear, observers believed the men were capturing footage for potentially profitable online content. Controversy Surrounding Online Casino Marketing Grows The suspected link to online gambling shifted the perspective on the incident. What could have been seen as a lapse in judgment appeared instead to be a coordinated stunt using vulnerable populations to gain attention. Although the men eventually departed, Williams expressed deep frustration, noting that the problem goes beyond this specific event. The connection to the gambling industry is particularly concerning. Sites like Rainbet function mainly through online platforms, frequently using influencers and streamers to grow their audience. Their marketing often appears unexpectedly within web videos and live streams. Earlier this month, the Rainbet logo was seen in overlays during a Netflix documentary titled Louis Theroux: The Manosphere. These placements were subtle but drew criticism regarding gambling-related risks. This latest occurrence further complicates the situation as digital creators obscure the boundaries between philanthropy, entertainment, and marketing. For Williams and his organization, the event served as a stark example of how easily their mission can be compromised. This article is provided by a third-party. Animo Studios and Stake Launch a Reimagined Live Casino Game

(AsiaGameHub) -   This new Stake-exclusive title pushes roulette past its traditional limits, leaning on novelty and visual spectacle rather than a full rewrite of the game's core rules A brand-new live casino release reimagines the look and feel of online roulette. Animo Studios has launched City Roulette, an exclusive title built for Stake. The game features a gameshow-inspired presentation while still delivering a full, traditional table game experience. It lets players interact with the game world beyond just placing chips on a number, ushering in a new era of innovation for live casino gaming. Animated Presenters Engage With the In-Game Space During gameplay, every spin impacts the simulated cityscape, triggering movement across the entire skyline. Lights, billboards, and buildings react to players' actions, while multipliers appear within the environment instead of as basic overlays on the screen. Hosts are another standout feature. Rather than a dealer standing behind a static table, animated characters guide players through the game. Real human presenters are converted into live, responsive characters. Each host has a unique visual identity and one-of-a-kind interactions with the audience. Live casino games have traditionally relied on a human presenter to build player trust. This new approach preserves that key human element but places it within a flexible animated setting that lets the character interact directly with the game space. Overall, City Roulette delivers players an experience that sits between a game show and a livestream. Each round can activate boosted payouts that reach up to 500 times the original stake, while the multiplier system adds an extra layer of competitiveness. These boosts are not active every round, but when they do appear, they become the main attraction of the spin, drawing focus to the chance of a much larger win. The Technology Shows Great Potential Animo's founder, Harley Fresh, frames the project as a proof of concept rather than a fully finished product. He notes that the system can support a wide range of themes, characters, and even different game formats, turning a once-static experience into a constantly evolving system. This kind of flexibility and scalability could be extremely valuable for partners looking to strengthen their game offerings. “Stake City Roulette is an early example of what our technology can achieve, blending real-time entertainment with tools that bring recognizable characters and interactive environments to life.” Harley Fresh, Founder of Animo Studios For Stake, the exclusive nature of the title gives it significant appeal. The platform has built its identity around content that cannot be found anywhere else, and City Roulette fits perfectly into that strategy. Branding is woven directly into the environment, creating the feeling that players are interacting with a self-contained world, rather than a generic, neutral game table. This launch also offers a glimpse into the future of live casino games. While past innovations have mostly focused on adding side bets or improving payout structures, Animo Studios instead prioritizes presentation and interactivity. It remains unclear whether this approach will gain widespread traction. Even so, the unique blend of live broadcasting and animated environments has the potential to redefine live casino gaming. Guard at Oakland Gambling Den Set Free After No Connection to Unsolved Murder Is Found

(AsiaGameHub) -   Ray Gilbert, 27, who was employed as a “security guard” at an illegal gambling den in Oakland, California, and was found holding a firearm linked to an unsolved murder, has been set free after authorities were unable to connect him to the killing. Man Goes Free After Officials Are Unable to Establish a Connection Between Him and the Killing Gilbert was first taken into custody alongside three other people in July 2023 during a law enforcement raid on the illegal casino. A few weeks later, a search of his residence turned up a gun that detectives confirmed was used in the fatal shooting of 21-year-old Mynyamani Stevenson in the parking lot of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oakland on July 29, 2023. Federal prosecutors later indicted Gilbert, alleging he was part of a “robbery crew” with ties to Oakland’s Case Gang. Court records show that the group targeted victims, including a man who had won cash at the Livermore Casino, trailing him back to his home before robbing him. Assistant Federal Public Defender Gabriela Bischof, Gilbert’s legal representative, noted that the government’s evidence only indicates Gilbert is connected to people and environments that may be seen as negative influences. She argued that based on the submitted facts, the Court cannot conclude that her client personally participated in violent behavior, nor should he face punishment for his associations. Gilbert spent around two years in custody after the case was filed, and following his release, he has obtained a position at a warehouse in the East Bay. In court filings, Bischof stated that Gilbert has made a positive life change. In other recent updates related to illicit gambling operations, Taiwanese law enforcement broke up a multi-billion-dollar criminal ring that used casinos in Macau to launder illegally obtained funds. Hard Life Circumstances Drove Gilbert Toward Criminal Activity Bischof explained that Gilbert has encountered violence for his entire life, having been shot five times, with the first incident happening at age 13. His father was killed when Gilbert was only 5, and as an adult in 2021, he was bitten for 45 seconds by Purcy, the K9 handled by disgraced former Antioch officer Morteza Amiri. Earlier this year, Amiri was handed a federal prison sentence for setting his dog on a man without valid reason. Gilbert has been repeatedly targeted by law enforcement, but has so far avoided long prison sentences. In 2020, his phone was wiretapped, along with the devices of six other people suspected of being affiliated with the Case Gang. This surveillance was conducted in connection with the murder of 27-year-old Shawn Tillis in San Pablo, and the nonfatal shooting of a former Case Gang member who had been labeled a “snitch” by the group. None of the suspects were ever charged, however. In other shooting-related news, a man was fatally shot by police last week in Thackerville, Oklahoma, after he pulled out a gun when officers approached him. Banijay upbeat on ‘resilient’ markets offering ‘regulatory stability’

(AsiaGameHub) -   During an investor presentation on March 26, Banijay Entertainment—parent company of Tipico and Betclic—reaffirmed its confidence in the strictly regulated European markets where it currently operates. In its investor deck, the operator stated that Betclic maintains the top position for online betting in France, while Tipico holds the leading spot across Germany’s betting sector. The group added that Tipico’s Admiral betting business also holds a strong leading position in Austria. Banijay noted that its acquisition of Tipico—first announced in October 2023—“strengthened its leadership in sports betting and gaming by adding two new countries with leading positions.” Group CEO François Riahi commented that Europe remains “the largest and one of the most attractive regions globally for the business.” According to Riahi, Europe represents “half of the global [gaming] market, which importantly, and unlike the US, was characterised by greater regulatory visibility and stability.” The CEO pointed out that operating in highly regulated markets enhances the predictability of their business model. Notably, France, Germany, and Austria are considered among Europe’s more restrictive markets. France does not legally permit iGaming, while Germany has been grappling with strict player restrictions—including stake and deposit limits—and a large black market. Currently, only one licence is available in Austria for lotteries and online gaming products. This 15-year permit is held by Win2day, a brand of Austrian Lotteries (a subsidiary of Casinos Austria, which also owns all 12 land-based casino licences). Top-tier operators consolidating in strictly regulated markets However, this push by leading European gaming groups to prioritise heavily regulated markets appears to be part of a broader trend. FDJ United, which acquired Kindred last year, has made similar moves to consolidate the sector in these markets. This strategy supports the trend of tier-one players consolidating the sector as smaller operators struggle to navigate tax hikes amid tightening restrictions across the continent. Speaking to iGB on this topic last November, veteran gambling strategist Vaughan Lewis said: “This shows that significant value creation is driven by regulated markets. Regulatory challenges create entry barriers, which tend to increase the value and sustainability of leading operators.” Addressing investors, Banijay’s Riahi stated that the operator’s current markets are underpinned by robust frameworks to protect established players. This, he said, creates meaningful entry barriers and reduces the risk of disruptions. Excluding the black market, he estimated Europe’s gambling sector accounts for 44% of the global €97 billion in GGR in 2024. He noted that France, Germany, Austria, Poland, and Portugal are currently underserved markets. For France, he expects a 5-7x growth opportunity—from a market of three million players to up to twenty million. Banijay is targeting €100 million in synergies between Tipico and Betclic over the mid-term, split into €70 million in opex and approximately €30 million in capex synergies. Germany’s regulation deemed “too strict” Despite his confidence in European growth, the Banijay CEO expressed frustration with Germany’s challenging regulatory landscape while answering analysts’ questions. “Germany is a country where regulation is too tough, and a portion of the market still consists of an unprotected black market,” he said. But Riahi added that it is the sector’s role to work with policymakers to tackle growing black market threats. “The same applies to iGaming in France, so we believe that with our expanded European presence, it will be our job to convince governments that it is in no one’s interest to let a black market develop when regulation is too stringent and intended to protect,” he noted. Germany’s regulator recently reported that its black market accounts for only 23% of the total market size. However, stakeholders warned this was an overly “conservative” estimate, with the actual figure closer to 50%. On prediction markets, Riahi said Banijay’s brands have not experienced any leakage in European sports betting. He noted that European regulation is heavily restrictive of novelty and non-sports markets, leaving no room for prediction markets to develop in the region.
